How do I enroll my child at the Swedish School?

Do you have a waiting list?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Please go to Enrollment on our website, click the email link under Step 1, and you will be put on the list for the next semester. Our younger grades fill up quickly, and so we recommend enrolling your children as soon as possible.

Can my child enroll in the middle of the semester?

Yes, as long as there is space available. Please email your request to info@swedishschool-losangeles.org.

Question 4

My child understands Swedish but does not speak it very well. May they still attend Swedish school?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the age of the child. In the younger grades, the requirement to speak Swedish is less strict, as preschoolers are still at the early stages of their language development. Students enrolling in the older grades (Rabbits and up) will start off with a trial period of three lessons. If the teacher deems that the child does not have the language skills required to participate in the class, the child will be placed in the Foxes, a class specifically tailored for students with little to no prior knowledge of Swedish.

We do not speak Swedish at home but would like our child to learn Swedish. Can they attend Swedish school?

Yes, the Foxes is a class specifically tailored for students with little to no prior knowledge of Swedish. The other grades for school-aged students are held exclusively in Swedish, and are for children who have at least one parent who is a Swedish citizen, and where Swedish is spoken consistently at home.

Why are there no classes for teenagers?

The Swedish School offers Swedish lessons for students up to 16 years of age. However, a minimum of seven students is required for us to be able to form a class, and unfortunately we currently do not have enough students enrolling.

Do you offer Swedish lessons for adults?

Accepted Answer

Unfortunately, we currently do not offer classes for adults. However, with enough interest, it is something we might be able to offer again.

Question 8

I am interested in working as a teacher at the Swedish School of Los Angeles. How do I apply?

Accepted Answer

We are always interested in finding new, dedicated teachers! Our school offers supplementary education in Swedish and Swedish culture. A teaching degree and/or experience working with children is preferable but not a must. Classes are held two hours a week and you work on a freelance basis, i.e. you are not a permanent employee of the Swedish School. Applicants residing in Sweden must first obtain a work permit or visa allowing you to work in the United States. The Swedish school is not able to assist with this. I signed up to volunteer at an event, but something has come up and I can no longer fulfill my obligation. What do I do?

No problem, parents can swap volunteer assignments with each other if needed. However, it is on you to find a replacement. This can be done via Sign Up Genius.

Question 10

I have very limited time, do I have to volunteer?

The Swedish school is a non-profit organization and without the help of our families, we simply do not have the means to throw our much loved Christmas and Summer Graduation parties, to keep our Swedish library open, to offer coffee and cake in the waiting room, etc. You are only expected to volunteer for 2.5 hours per semester. That being said, we understand that this may not work for everyone, and as an alternative, you are welcome to contribute $100 to our organization instead. Read more under the Enrollment tab.

As a parent, what can I do at home to keep the Swedish language alive?

Read Swedish books suitable for your child's language skills, no matter their age. Pointing books for small children. Older kids may be able to read by themselves. Watch Swedish movies and TV shows for kids (SVT Play, UR Play, SF Barn)Play Swedish music in the car.Don't mix languages when speaking with your child. Stick solely to Swedish.Point to and describe things in Swedish.Even if your child addresses you in English, always answer them in Swedish.
